Build the Mahouts, Rent the Elephant

I am a sucker for good words, and one from Tamil literature keeps surfacing the deeper I go into AI: மதக் களிறு, the bull elephant in musth, the periodic testosterone surge that turns a beast of burden into a force of nature. It breaks through fortress gates, shrugs off a wall of arrows, and keeps charging. The same surge that makes it unstoppable in a siege makes it lethal to its own side, unless a skilled mahout works it with a well-placed அங்குசம் (ankusam), the goad.

That is a better mental model for modern AI than most of what is circulating right now.

THE SURGE

Traditional software was a beast of burden. Deterministic, predictable, does the task. Generative and agentic AI runs in a kind of systemic musth. Large parameter counts and long context windows synthesize at a speed that breaks the old limits of human output. Give a model agency to call tools and write files, and the same power turns unpredictable: runaway loops, hallucinated actions, moves nobody authorized. The strength and the danger are the same property.

THE ANKUSAM

You do not stop a மதக் களிறு with force. You guide it. Two layers do that work.

First, the training ground. RLHF and Constitutional AI condition the beast before it sees the battlefield, shaping the policy through gradient updates, the way an elephant is broken to the goad long before the siege.

Second, the ankusam itself. Deterministic logic nodes and evaluation rigs that route, constrain, and stress-test outputs before they reach the real world.

THE KUMKI

The sharpest part of the old practice was the கும்கி: trained, disciplined captive elephants sent in to block, calm, and corral the wild one. Not before the fight. During it.

That is the pattern the market keeps missing. The training ground conditions the model offline. The kumki walks beside it live: verifier models, LLM-as-judge, guard and monitor models inside the agent loop, grading and correcting in real time. The kumki is verification infrastructure. It is the control layer that runs while the elephant is already charging.

THE MAHOUT'S BURDEN

Nobody won a siege by killing the மதக் களிறு. They won by harnessing it to break the gate.

The next decade of AI follows the same logic. The market is overpricing model size and underpricing the control layer. Value does not accrue to the elephant. It accrues to the mahout, the ankusha, and the kumki: the harness, the goad, and the verifier that walks beside the beast.

Build the mahouts. Rent the elephant.
